History of the Tennessee Lottery
The Tennessee Lottery is a relative newcomer on the lottery scene, but it's shown a lot of promise in its first decade of existence.
The Tennessee Lottery was established by then-Governor Phil Bredesen on June 11th, 2003 after over three years of referendums, votes and legislation. The first tickets went on sale on January 20th, 2004 and $10.8 million in sales were generated on that day alone. A year later, the Tennessee Lottery celebrated its first birthday with some solid numbers under its belt - a total of $863.4 million in ticket sales and $246 million for educational initiatives in the Volunteer State. Over $3 billion has been raised for education in the past ten years.
The Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship program administers a number of scholarships and grants to college students across the state, which enables Tennessee residents to pursue their dreams of higher education without worrying about funding. The Tennessee Lottery also funds after-school programs that enhance and enrich the educational experiences of elementary, middle and high school students.
