A Canadian couple who won $1million on an instant scratchcard have said they plan to “have a wonderful life together”. Construction workers Robbie Hansen and Alex Salter, who are both in their 50s, won the cash on Monday after picking up a $100-million Fortune ticket on their way to work.

After scratching off the $10 ticket and then verifying the win with colleagues in the staff canteen, the pair set off to meet Canada Lotto organisers to make the win official.

Speaking to The Star Phoenix newspaper, Hansen said: “We couldn't believe it. We're very lucky to start over again in our 50s and get another chance. We are going to have a wonderful life together.”

The couple’s decision to buy lotto tickets means they’re both finishing work this week, before embarking on a coast-to-coast motorcycle trip, followed by a canoeing holiday through the Northwest Territories. The rest of the cash is going to be spent on paying off their mortgages, buying a retirement property and taking care of their six children.
