Where is the US$590m Powerball Winner?

Wednesday May 22nd 2013

The small town of Zephyrhills, Florida is eagerly waiting for the record breaking winner of the US$590 million Powerball jackpot to make themselves known to lottery officials. The single winning ticket was purchased at a Publix supermarket in the town of 13,000 inhabitants and although rumours regarding the winners’ identity have been circulating since the jackpot was won on Friday 17th May 2013, they have yet to come forward.

Due to Floridian law, the winners’ identity must be made public upon claiming their jackpot prize and, if the player opts to take the lump sum equating to US$370,896,780 before tax, they must come forward within 60 days of the draw date. However, if they intend to take the 30 year annuity option, they have 180 days in which to claim their prize.

This was a record breaking jackpot in more ways than one. Not only was it the largest Powerball jackpot to date, and second largest jackpot in the world, it has also hit the record books for being the largest pay out to a single ticket holder in worldwide lottery history. The record for the biggest lottery jackpot is still held by the US$656 million Mega Millions jackpot which was won in March 2012 but, in that case, the jackpot was shared between three winning tickets.

Whilst the world waits in anticipation for the jackpot winner to come forward, attention is turning back to the Powerball draw taking place tonight which has a brand new jackpot of US$40 million.
