O’Hare Airport Employee Wins Big on Lucky Day Lotto

Wednesday March 11th 2015

An O’Hare Airport employee’s decision to buy a Lucky Day Lotto ticket just minutes before heading to his shift has paid off, as he matched all five numbers drawn to win a $700,000 jackpot. Jose Martinez, who works as a waiter in the busy airport, regularly plays Lucky Day Lotto and hurried over to the Paralyzed Veterans of America Lottery stand in Terminal 2 to buy a ticket for the midday draw before going to work on Friday February 20th.

When he went back the next day to check his ticket, Martinez discovered that he had won the top prize. Speaking to Illinois Lottery officials this week, he said that he had used birthdays of family members as his lucky numbers. It seems to be a successful strategy for Martinez, as just three months prior to his massive win he had matched four main numbers on Lucky Day Lotto by using those same birthdays.

Martinez and his wife plan to share the money with their family and purchase a new house. The kiosk will receive a retailer bonus of $7,000 for selling him the winning ticket, and the numbers he matched for the draw were 1, 14, 27, 40 and 42.

Lucky Day Lotto is a draw game held twice a day, seven days a week. Players pick five numbers from 1 to 45 and pay just $1 per ticket. To learn more about this game, or any of the other great draw games offered by the Illinois Lottery, visit the Illinois Lottery Results page.
