The lucky winner, Herman Kahan, only joined the New York Lottery’s online Mega Millions subscription service last year, and it was definitely a decision that paid off.

His ticket was the sole winner that matched all six numbers drawn on Tuesday, March 8: 7, 18, 38, 58, 64, and the gold Mega Ball, 24. The jackpot was originally estimated at $126 million but high ticket sales drove its actual value to an amazing $128 million.

Kahan’s win was the first time a NY player took home the Mega Millions jackpot since September 2021. He decided to take his winnings as a cash option lump sum payout of $52,559,839 after tax withholdings.

In New York, Mega Millions had sales of $333,932,996 in fiscal year 2020-2021, while school districts in the city’s five boroughs received $1,331,975,933 in Lottery Aid to Education funds. New York State education as a whole received $3.59 billion in Lottery contributions during the same period.

Second Mega Millions Jackpot Claim in June

Kahan’s prize was the second Mega Millions jackpot to be claimed this month. Across the country on the West Coast, California winner Kristine Wellenstein stepped forward recently to collect her $426 million prize won on Friday, January 28 with a ticket sold by a Chevron station in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles County.

This Week’s Jackpots

Unusually, the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are currently the same value - $312 million! The cash option is estimated at $173.6 million for Mega Millions and $175.1 million for Powerball.

Your next chance to win the Powerball top prize is tonight, Wednesday, June 22. Mega Millions’ next draw is Friday, June 24. Don’t miss out - get your tickets for both games now.
