A jackpot of $940 million was up for grabs on Friday, but once again it proved to be just out of reach.

Five players came close as they matched all five main numbers but missed out on the Mega Ball, making themselves millionaires in the process. One of those five - a ticket holder from Pennsylvania - boosted their payout to $5 million after adding the Megaplier. See all the prize payouts for July 28th.

Mega Millions is the only lottery to have already given away four prizes in excess of $1 billion, and the current jackpot could now climb very quickly towards the game’s all-time record.

The record has stood since October 2018, when a player from South Carolina landed an extraordinary $1.537 billion. They waited several months to come forward, then decided to stay anonymous.

Players from Maine, Illinois and Michigan have since felt that same euphoria of winning a $1 billion jackpot, and another big pay day now beckons for someone. There’s no limit to how high the jackpot could go, though,so it could keep rising for another few draws.

The jackpot was last won on April 18, and over the last three and a half months there have been more than 26.4 million winning tickets across all the other prize levels.

If you’ve not had much luck yet, you could try generating a fresh set of numbers. Make sure to purchase your ticket in time, then keep an eye out for the draw in Atlanta, Georgia, to find out if you are a winner.
