Massive weight lifted, say lottery couple

Tuesday January 4th 2011

A couple who faced losing their home due to financial problems have won £1million on the EuroMillions Christmas raffle. Derek Streets, 61 and his wife Sandra, 62, believed they might have to sell their home in Scarborough due to financial worries. That is until they became one of the 25 instant millionaires, created during the EuroMillions Christmas Eve Millionaire Raffle.

Mr Streets said: “The company I worked for went bankrupt about five years ago, and it has been a difficult situation money-wise since then.

“It’s the security the money brings rather than the amount. We have enough to pay our mortgage off and then we get a secure future.”

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, Mr Streets had been struck down with flu over Christmas, and decided to buy lottery tickets online while he was bored in bed.

“Never in a million years did I think I would actually win,” he said. “And it's all thanks to that rotten bug.”

The couple say they will use some of the lottery money to buy a new car and perhaps a caravan, and are also going to think about taking a holiday – something they say they haven’t done in years.
