Lucky Eleven?

Monday October 13th 2008

Eleven people matched all six numbers in the UK Lotto jackpot draw on Saturday 11 October, 2008. This meant that each winner received a £713,924 share of the £7,853,164 jackpot fund.

If you are wondering why there were so many winners of this draw, all you have to do is take a look at the winning numbers, which were: 20, 21, 23, 24, 27, and 28. That’s right – all six numbers were in the 20s (pink balls), and only the bonus ball 33 broke the pattern.

Since many players choose to enter birthdays, anniversaries and house numbers as their lottery selections, any draw that produces six numbers in the range 1 to 31 has a greater chance of being shared than one that also includes numbers in the range 32 to 49. When a draw produces all six numbers from one particular “decade” the odds of sharing the jackpot prize get even higher.

We have said before that playing a Lucky Dip line of numbers is often the best way of reducing your chances of having to share a jackpot if you are lucky enough to win and the draw results for 11 October show exactly why that is so important.

Every one of the eleven jackpot winners were extremely lucky to beat odds of 1 in 13,983,816 and match all six numbers, but they came away from their “once in a lifetime” win with less than a million pounds each. No doubt they are all very happy to have won £713,924, but we would guess that this was a lot less than they had expected a lottery jackpot to bring them.

We offer our congratulations to the lucky eleven who won the lottery last Saturday, because £713,924 is still a nice amount to win and certainly better than not winning at all. But for those of us who didn’t win, perhaps we should take heed and make sure that we play genuinely random selections rather than relying on birthdays and other common picks.
