Friday July 13th 2018

A vet assistant from Saint Landry, Louisiana, vowed to continue working despite coming forward to claim a $2 million Powerball prize this week. Anthony Colligan won the prize in the June 23 drawing and claimed his prize from lottery headquarters on July 11.

“A Millionaire With Duct-Taped Shoes”

Colligan’s fiancée Rox was checking his tickets for him the day after the draw when she realized he had won the seven-figure prize. “I said ‘You’re going to want to wake up, Anthony. You won the Lottery!”’ she explained to lottery officials. Despite the win, Colligan returned to work at Baronne Veterinary Clinic on Monday morning, complete with a broken tennis shoe. “It’s funny that a millionaire would be walking into work with duct-taped shoes”, Colligan remarked to his boss, who at the time thought he was joking.

Despite the big win, Colligan has said he will continue to work at the veterinary clinic. He said: “I love the clients and people I work with. I couldn’t quit. I get sad on Sundays, because I’m not working!”

He bought the winning ticket from the 1 Stop in Grand Coteau after hearing that the same shop sold a ticket worth $350,000 in December. The store will receive a $20,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Colligan matched five white balls to win $1 million, but because he opted into the Power Play, his prize was doubled, thanks to the x2 multiplier drawn on the night.

The winning numbers from the draw on June 23 drawing were 16, 29, 43, 45, and 56, with Powerball 25.

Mega Millions Jackpot Approaching Record Value

The Mega Millions jackpot continues to climb after going 19 draws without a winner. It was last won on Friday 4th May, when a ticket holder from Dayton, Ohio, landed a prize worth $143 million, and it now stands at a huge $340 million. If it is won in the draw on Friday it will be the ninth-biggest Mega Millions jackpot ever awarded.

It has already been a good year for Mega Millions after Richard Wahl of Vernon, New Jersey, won $533 million in the draw on March 30. It was just the second ticket he had ever bought for the game and he decided to take the cash lump sum payout, worth $324 million. That jackpot had rolled over for 24 consecutive draws, so potentially, this latest jackpot could reach a similar amount if it is not won in the next several weeks.
