Huge Powerball Jackpot Won in New York

Thursday December 27th 2018

Last night’s Powerball draw offered a huge jackpot of $298 million, and there was one lucky winner from the state of New York. The jackpot went 16 draws without a winner, and just a few more could have taken it to record levels.

Winning Numbers

The all-important winning numbers from yesterday’s draw were 5, 25, 38, 52, and 67, with Powerball 24. The jackpot winner hit all six numbers to win the top prize all for themselves, while another three ticket holders matched five numbers to win $1 million each.

Over 842,000 prizes were given away in total, and you can find a full list of payouts on the Powerball Numbers page. The jackpot winner, who becomes New York’s second big winner in the space of two months, has a year to come forward and claim their prize.

Mega Millions Jackpot Still Unclaimed

The record Powerball jackpot from January 2016 still stands as the world’s biggest ever at $1.58 billion, but it looked set to fall recently when an estimated Mega Millions jackpot of $1.6 billion was offered in the draw on October 23. One winner from South Carolina landed the entire amount, but after total ticket sales had been counted it was revealed that it was in fact worth $1.53 billion, just missing out on the record.

As it happens, that winner has yet to come forward and claim their prize, and speculation is rife as to who holds the winning ticket. It was bought from KC Mart #7 in Simpsonville, SC, but whoever owns it has yet to make themselves known to South Carolina Lottery officials.

While it is uncommon for lottery winners to wait so long before claiming, this is not a typical jackpot, and it may be that the lucky person is preparing for their windfall as fully as possible. They have until April 2019 to claim, but if you’re wondering what would happen to the money if the winner doesn’t come forward, our previous article will fill you in.
