Georgia Lottery player gets birthday surprise
Thursday March 17th 2011A grandmother of four from Albany, Georgia, found she had quite a lot to celebrate last week. Not only did Marion Shewmake turn 62, she also won $152,989 on the lottery. While visiting The Oglethorpe Lounge in Albany, along with her husband Kenneth, Ms Shewmake decided to pick up a lottery ticket for the Fantasy 5 draw on March 8.
Little did she know her Quik Pik selection would win her half of the jackpot prize. Ms Shewmake discovered her luck after going to check the lottery results online.
She said: "We went to the computer and got the numbers. I feel wonderful. I have no plans at the present, but I’m sure I’ll spend some of it."
Ms Shewmake told Georgia Lottery organisers that she plans to retire later this month after working for the past 24 years at a local bank.
It’s certainly been a birthday week that Ms Shewmake won’t forget in a hurry, but she is not the only one celebrating. The owners of The Oglethorpe Lounge bar will receive a bonus of $4,000 for selling one of the winning tickets.
