Cubs Fan Celebrates World Series Spot With $1 Million Lottery Win

Monday October 24th 2016

Chicago Cubs’ return to the World Series for the first time since 1945 may have felt like a lottery win to many fans, but for one lucky man it really has been been an incredible week after he also won $1 million while watching a game. Rick Kempke, from Lockport, can now look forward to spending the fantastic amount of money he won on a $300,000,000 Cash Spectacular scratchcard, as well as seeing his team play in the season finale.

Kempke, 56, who bought his ticket at Speedway in South State Street, told the Illinois Lottery: “I won $1,000,000 on a $300,000,000 Cash Spectacular ticket.  I’m a huge Cubs fan and I was at home watching a game when I scratched my ticket and won!” Kempke opted to receive his winnings as a one-off payment of $600,000, and plans to spend the money on a new house and car.

He also intends to use some of the money on tickets to Cubs games, and may well try to go along to one of the matches against the Cleveland Indians in the World Series, after his team booked their spot with a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The store which sold him the winning ticket will also receive a bonus of $10,000.

The $300,000,000 Cash Spectacular game is one of many options available to Illinois Lottery players, and Kempke has admitted that he is only an occasional player. He will now be hoping that some of his good luck rubs off on the Cubs, who have not won the World Series since 1908, while other lottery fans in the state will be rushing out to buy tickets to try and emulate his success.
