A Brookhaven man has thanked his wife for a gentle reminder to buy a Powerball ticket after the lucky couple won a jackpot of $246 million. William and Heather ten Broeke matched all five main numbers plus the Powerball in the drawing on September 17th to win the massive top prize, but have now admitted it almost didn’t happen.

The husband and wife were out shopping at a Publix in town when Heather turned to William and asked ‘Aren’t you going to buy a ticket?’, and it paid off handsomely as they collected their winnings from Georgia Lottery headquarters on Monday. William told reporters: “Without her reminding me to buy the ticket, we wouldn’t have won.”

William and Heather did not realize at first that they had won, but later saw reports on the news that a ticket from their area had won and had still not been claimed. They checked their ticket and admitted they were shocked to discover their good fortune.

They have decided to take the cash option, worth $165.6 million before taxes, and are looking forward to making the most of their winnings. As well as traveling and investing some of the money, the lucky couple hope to bring happiness to others by donating to charity and helping out their family.

The jackpot has not been won since the ten Broekes got lucky and now stands at $80 million ahead of the next drawing tonight. Players can purchase tickets from any authorized retailer in participating states and jurisdictions, and there are sure to be a lot of husbands who will make sure they don’t forget to play if they are given a nudge by their wives!
