Wednesday June 17th 2015

A ticket holder from Arizona has come forward to claim an incredible $188.9 million Powerball jackpot from the drawing on Wednesday, June 3rd. They matched the winning numbers of 6, 8, 13, 37 and 40 with Powerball 11 to become a multimillionaire overnight after buying the winning ticket at a Quik Trip in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix.

Fortunately for the newest Powerball millionaire, the winner claimed their prize in good time as opposed to leaving it tucked behind a pipe in their basement for well over a month, as Anthony Perosi did in New York earlier this year.

Lottery officials have not released any details about the winner, who doesn’t want their identity to be revealed. While Arizona lawmakers recently passed legislation protecting lottery winners’ anonymity for 90 days after claiming a large prize, the law only goes into effect next month. Other states are considering similar legislation.

The Arizona resident is the ninth jackpot winner of 2015 and has picked up the second-largest jackpot of the year. No one knows if they have chosen to take a lump sum of $119.9 million before taxes or if they will opt for an annuity. In Arizona, any lottery prize worth more than $599 is reportable to the IRS, with prizes over $5,000 generally facing both federal and state taxes of 25 and five percent respectively.

After rolling over last Saturday, the Powerball jackpot has increased to $70 million (estimated cash value $43 million) for tonight’s game. If you want to emulate the Arizona Powerball winner and pick up a fortune of your own, you can buy tickets for the drawing from authorized retailers near you.
