The lucky ticket holder has up to a year to claim their windfall from lottery officials in California. They will also need to decide whether they wish to receive the full amount ($1,079,800,000) in annuity payments or take the reduced lump sum amount of $558.1 million, minus taxes.

California is no stranger to billion-dollar lottery wins, just last year Edwin Castro from California purchased a single ticket from a gas station in Altadena which went on to win the $2.04 billion record jackpot. Castro claimed his winnings three months after the drawing took place and opted to take the cash lump sum payout of $997.6 million.

The winner (or winners) of the $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot on July 19 will have similar decisions to make in terms of when they claim and which option they take; Cash or Annuity

Who won the billion dollar Powerball jackpot?

Currently no information is known about the winning ticket holder(/s), such as whether or not it's a single player, a group pool, if the numbers chosen were by manual entry or Quick Pick, or the name of the winner.

The only information released by lottery officials at this stage is that the ticket was sold in downtown Los Angeles at Las Palmitas Mini Market.

It's likely that in the near future more information will be made public, as lottery anonymity rules in California state that the winner's name will be made public once they have claimed the prize.

What is known, however, is that the winning ticket is responsible for landing the third-biggest jackpot in the history of Powerball (so far)! You can view a list of the biggest Powerball winners here.

Other big winners in the $1 billion Powerball draw

In addition to California's latest jackpot winner being created, the drawing saw 39 players become overnight millionaires by matching the five white balls without the red Powerball number. Of these, 36 won $1 million and a further three won $2 million by choosing the PowerPlay option to multiply their winnings.

Other big wins include 62 players winning $100,000 and 195 players winning $50,000 across the country. In total, more than 4.8 million Powerball players won a prize of any kind on the night. For players in states that offer Double Play, a further 187,834 players won prizes ranging from $7 to $50,000.

What happens to the Powerball jackpot now?

Now that the jackpot has been won after accumulating over 38 consecutive draws, it has reset to its base amount of $20 million, with a cash lump sum value of $10.3 million. If you're looking for the next big eye-watering lottery jackpot though, you should look no further than Mega Millions, which is currently offering an estimated $720 million for the drawing on Friday!
