Time running out for Canadian lotto winner

Monday March 7th 2011

There are just a matter of days left for a Canadian lottery winner to come forward and claim a $10,000 prize won 12 months ago. A ticket matching six numbers in an Encore Lotto 6/49 draw on March 17, 2010, has still to be handed in, according to lottery officials.

The numbers for the draw were 5-4-6-8-2-0-2. The missing winner matched the first six numbers in order but has so far failed to turn up to collect their prize.

In a statement, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation said the winner should make sure they sign the back of the ticket immediately and bring it to the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

The most likely explanation for the delay in coming forward is that either the winner has not checked the lottery results and is unaware they have won, or they cannot find their ticket. However, some big winners simply choose to take their time about validating a claim.

An American couple from North Carolina knew about their win for months, but only came forward with the $1million winning ticket a few hours before the expiry deadline.

In Britain, there are plenty of UK lotto winners who have so far failed to come forward for their winnings. There are currently 17 prizes of more than £100,000 still waiting to be claimed.
