Single ticket scoops Powerball jackpot

Friday December 3rd 2010

The owner of a lottery ticket sold in a grocery store in Arizona is sitting on a $95.3million fortune after winning Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot. So far no one has come forward to claim the prize, although it has been confirmed that the winning ticket was bought at a Safeway store in Fort Mohave. The winner now has a total of 180 days to come forward and present the winning ticket to lottery organisers.

The numbers from Wednesday’s draw were 5, 10, 11, 12 and 20, and the Powerball was 2. The winner will be able to choose to take either regular payments over a 30 year period for the full amount, or a lump sum of just under $50million.

According to the Mohave Daily News, the win has inspired others to flock to the Safeway store and buy lotto tickets in the hope that the luck will rub off. And it certainly has as far as the shop’s staff are concerned, with the store set to receive $25,000 in commission for selling the winning ticket.

Jeff Hatch-Miller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery, said he was looking forward to meeting the winner.

He said: “It’s going to be a pleasure for me to sign a cheque for more than $95 million, provide a very memorable holiday this year and shake the hand of someone whose life will never be the same.”
