Powerball Jackpot Surges Following Increased Ticket Sales

Wednesday January 6th 2016

Anticipation continues to build ahead of Wednesday’s Powerball drawing as the jackpot has increased to an astonishing $450 million. A flurry of ticket sales has boosted the value of the top prize by an addition $50 million; this follows the previous jackpot in last Saturday’s drawing going unclaimed, which initially increased the potential winnings for tonight’s game to $400 million.

It is estimated that an extra 125 million new tickets have been sold since Sunday, according to Kelly Cripe, a spokesperson for the Texas Lottery. In an interview with CNN Money, Cripe went on to say: “This is more than 10 times what we see when the jackpot is at low levels.” No player has won the Powerball jackpot since November 4th 2015, with 17 drawings having taken place in that time, and the excitement over the possibility of snagging a nine-figure sum has clearly captured the attention of players across the country.

The $450 million fortune on offer tonight is one of the largest prizes in Powerball history and, should it be won this evening, will rank as the sixth-biggest windfall for the game. However, this still does not come close to matching the largest individual prize in U.S., and indeed Powerball history, won by Gloria Mackenzie of Florida in 2013, which stands at a monstrous $590.5 million. This record may come under threat, should this jackpot remained unclaimed tonight.
Tickets can be bought from authorized retailers in participating states and results can be seen on Lottery.net following the drawing. Could it be you kicking 2016 off with a bang by winning a Powerball prize? Good luck!
