Powerball Jackpot Lands in Virginia as Washington Winner Claims Prize

Tuesday March 7th 2023

It was a weekend for big winners in Powerball, as a single ticket holder from Virginia landed Saturday’s $162 million jackpot. The last grand prize to be won - a $754 million jackpot from February 6 - was also claimed at last.

There were 10 drawings between the two jackpot wins, allowing the grand prize to quickly grow back into nine figures and push towards $200 million. The numbers for Saturday March 4 were 10, 16, 18, 40 and 66, with a Powerball of 16.

Among the 578,120 winners across the nine prize categories, one player matched all five white balls and the red Powerball. The winning ticket was sold in Pulaski County in Virginia, at the Gill Brothers gas station located on Cleburne Boulevard off Interstate 81 in Dublin.

The winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prize. It is only the second Powerball jackpot to ever be won in Virginia, 10 years after Dave Honeywell from Fredericksburg banked $217 million on Superbowl Sunday in February 2013.

Becky Bell is Washington Winner

While someone in Virginia was able to celebrate on Saturday night, there were also jubilant scenes on the west coast as the Washington Lottery revealed the identity of the $754 million winner from last month.

Becky Bell of Auburn, a supply chain analyst for multinational aerospace company Boeing, was named as the winner.

She had bought her ticket from the Fred Meyer grocery store in Auburn, having seen a sign for a Powerball jackpot of $747 million. “That’s when it hit me, I had to buy one more line,” she told Washington Lottery officials, making a connection between the advertised amount and her job with Boeing and deciding it could be her lucky day.

She eventually won $754 million as the final value was higher than advertised due to strong ticket sales, and she has decided to take it as a lump sum payment rather than an annuity. After taxes, that leaves Becky with $309.4 million.

If you want to try and become the third Powerball jackpot winner of 2023, make sure to take part every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night.
