Powerball Jackpot is Sixth-Biggest in History

Thursday February 2nd 2023

After a record-breaking 2022, the Powerball jackpot is poised to make more history after storming into the top six in the list of the biggest jackpots ever to be seen on the game. The grand prize currently stands at an estimated $700 million ahead of Saturday night’s drawing.

There is no limit to how high the Powerball jackpot can go - it keeps climbing until someone wins - and there has not been a winner for the past 32 draws since someone from Kansas landed $92.9 million on November 19th.

It is now at the stage where it is increasing more between draws due to a greater demand for tickets. The jackpot went from $576 million in Saturday’s drawing to $606 million on Monday, then $646 million on Wednesday.

With no winners again on Wednesday, it will now rise by more than $50 million for the weekend. The cash value of the $700 million jackpot is $375.7 million. It may only take a few more draws to go past $1 billion if the run of rollovers continues.

Biggest Powerball Winners

There is still a long way to go before the current jackpot threatens the existing record for the largest prize in history, but it could very soon enter the top three.

The third-biggest Powerball jackpot to date has been the $768 million won by Wisconsin’s Manuel Franco in March 2019. He was only 24 at the time and said he had immediately quit his job as he could not concentrate. He planned to take a break before trying to ‘help out the world’.

Second in the table of big jackpots is the $1.586 billion that was split three ways in January 2016. The winners were revealed to be John and Lisa Robinson of Munford in Tennessee, David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith from Melbourne Beach in Florida, and Marvin and Mae Acosta from Chino Hills in California.

A ticket holder from California broke the record for the biggest win in November 2022, snapping up a jackpot worth $2.04 billion. The cash option was $997 million, although the winner has yet to come forward.

How to Win Powerball

To win the Powerball jackpot, you must match all five main numbers from 1 to 69, and the Powerball number between 1 and 26. This grand prize is shared if there are multiple winners, or rolls over to the next draw if nobody wins.

There are eight other ways to win lower prizes in every draw, and you are guaranteed a payout as long as you match the Powerball.

You can also add the Power Play option to your ticket for an extra $1 per line to boost the value of non-jackpot winnings.

There is no strategy to guarantee that you will win the jackpot. It is not practical (or affordable) to buy all the different number combinations that would ensure a big win. However, you have a chance as long as you have a ticket, so don’t miss out on taking part.
