Double Play is an option that has been available in some states since August 2021. It has gradually expanded over time and now it has launched in the District of Columbia, with sales starting on Sunday, July 14.

Frank Suarez, Executive Director at the DC Lottery, said: “We’re giving players across the District additional opportunities to win with Powerball, one of our most popular lottery games. Players tell us they like to play for big jackpots and cash prizes, and Double Play is a new way for players to win millions.”

How Double Play Works

It costs an extra $1 to add Double Play to a Powerball play. Your numbers are then entered into a separate draw to give you another chance to win.

Double Play has all the same prize levels as the main draw, and in fact many of the payouts are worth more in the additional game. The Power Play multiplier does not apply to Double Play prizes.

The top prize is worth a fixed $10 million in every draw. Unlike the main jackpot, this does not roll over if there are no winning tickets. It was most recently won on June 24, by a ticket holder from Kentucky.

Depending on the combination of numbers drawn across Powerball and Double Play, it is even possible to win prizes in both games on the same day. Draws take place on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

It is expected to be a success in D.C., helping to create more winners and raise money for good causes in the capital. The DC Lottery has already transferred more than $2.3 billion to the District’s General Fund since it began in 1982.
