Wednesday January 29th 2014

Over a thousand players have had their bank balances boosted by a million dollars or more as a result of Powerball’s 2012 revamp. The revamp, which saw the price of tickets double from $1 to $2, also introduced a minimum jackpot of $40 million and an increased second tier prize of $1 million.

In a statement released on Monday, the Multi-State Lottery Association confirmed that since the redesign in January 2012, a total of 1,013 millionaires have been created; an average of nine per week. Prior to the redesign, the Multi-State Lottery Association had estimated 300 players would be made millionaires every year but recent figures paint a much more successful picture.

In addition to these record breaking results, the post-revamp Powerball jackpots have also reached astonishing highs. 84-year-old Gloria MacKenzie of Zephyrhills, Florida, won the largest jackpot in Powerball history when she won the phenomenal $590 million jackpot in May 2013. After just two years, the jackpot has breached the $500 million mark several times already, leaving players wondering if, and when, it will climb to a billion dollar jackpot.
