New Zealand player's lucky streak capped by win

Thursday December 30th 2010

A pensioner in Auckland, New Zealand kept up a lucky streak that began just before Christmas, and scooped the NZS12.9million jackpot in the country’s lottery Powerball draw. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought his winning ticket from the proceeds of a small sporting bet with friends, according to national news website tvnz.co.nz. And as a result, woke up much richer on Boxing Day morning, his decision to buy lottery tickets paying off to the tune of the equivalent of more than £6.4million.

“I was feeling lucky after my small win, so decided to try for a big win,” said the anonymous winner, who learned of his good fortune when he checked his numbers in the newspaper on Boxing Day morning.

And he had an unusual answer to every lottery winner’s toughest dilemma – where to safely keep their winning ticket – by putting it in his blood pressure monitor.

The sport-mad winner said that, after paying off his mortgage, and paying a visit to his local Ferrari dealer, he wanted to invest some of his winnings in helping the country’s athletes fulfil their potential, and do likewise with some lucky New Zealand businesses.

The man’s winnings comprised NZS12,658,036 from the Powerball First Division, and a further NZS333,333 from the Lotto First Division.
