Wednesday March 16th 2011

A maintenance worker from New York State found himself wide awake after stopping off on the way to work for a cup of coffee. William Traynor, known to his friends as Bill, was driving to work ahead of his shift at engineering firm Knowlton Technologies in Watertown, New York, when he stopped along the way to buy a cup of coffee.

Mr Traynor also purchased a $10 Lucky Tables instant scratchcard - and that decision changed his life.

The 43-year-old got back to his car, scratched the lottery ticket and discovered he’d just become an instant millionaire.

Mr Traynor said: "When I got into work I immediately went to my boss and asked for the rest of the day off so I could go claim my prize."

The lucky New York lotto player will now receive a cheque every year until 2030 for just over $33,000 after tax. Mr Traynor said he plans to spend some of his new-found wealth on doing up his son’s car, paying off the mortgage on his home, and heading off on the holiday of a lifetime to Hawaii.
