New Millionaire for Life Game Could Be Launching in 2025

Wednesday May 15th 2024

Sources found that a new multi-state lottery might be launched across 13 US states in 2025. The game would be called Millionaire for Life and it would be a hybrid between Lucky for Life and Cash4Life, potentially with a top prize of $1 million a year for life.

In November last year, the Idaho Lottery Commission held a meeting in which, among other things, they discussed the prospects of launching this new game that would run alongside the current Cash4Life and Lucky for Life games but offer a vastly bigger top prize. According to the minutes published online, the proposal came from Lottery Director Jeff Anderson:

“Director Anderson introduced a new potential game, Millionaire for Life. This is a game that combines Lucky for Life and Cash for Life along with 13 other states including Idaho. Bringing these games together will mean an increased top prize of a $1,000,000 a year for life. This game is expected to launch in 2025.”

Although it has not been confirmed whether Millionaire for Life will be launched, the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) began taking steps towards starting the process. On January 16, 2024 a trademark application was filed for a game with this name.

However, this does not prove anything as several trademark applications have been filed in the past few years, which in the end did not materialize. Two examples are from 2021, when trademark applications were made for “Powered By International Powerball” and “Powered By US Powerball”. In those instances, discussions were being had about expanding Powerball to the UK and Australia, however the Idaho Lottery did not agree with these proposals. Another example is when a trademark application for a game called “Millions for Life” was also submitted. Nothing to that effect has happened yet either.

Launching a game with such a substantial top prize would most likely attract many lottery enthusiasts, mainly because the amount of money on offer is way bigger than what annuity-style lotteries usually offer. For now, we can only assume that Millionaire for Life will combine Lucky for Life and Cash4Life and it will have 13 participating states, including Idaho. Whether these states would then offer all three annuity games or just one would remain to be seen, as it's unclear if Mr Anderson is suggesting combining these three games into one new, single lottery, or keeping them all separate.

It’s not clear which states will make it on the list, however it’s interesting to note that when Lotto America was relaunched in 2017 by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), a number of 13 states joined altogether. Those states were: Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The same states could be the very same ones that could launch Millionaire for Life, especially since the game would be operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL).
