New Jersey Ticket Wins $190 Million Powerball Jackpot
Thursday April 9th 2020A New Jersey Powerball player is $190 million better off after a single ticket hit the jackpot on Wednesday night by matching all six numbers - white balls 2, 37, 39, 48, 54, and the red Powerball 5.
The winning ticket for the April 8 draw was purchased at Buy-rite Liquor Piscataway, 1353 Stelton Rd., Piscataway in Middlesex County. The store will receive a $30,000 bonus.
“Congratulations to the winner of this multi-million-dollar jackpot!" said New Jersey Lottery Executive Director James Carey. "We encourage the winner to sign the back of the ticket, make a copy of both sides and put it in a safe place. We recommend contacting a financial advisor and an attorney before reaching out to Lottery officials at 1-800-222-0996 to arrange to file a claim for this jackpot prize.”
The winner will have the enviable choice to take their prize as a cash option one-time payment of $156 million, or to receive the full advertised $190 million jackpot as a yearly annuity.
In addition to the grand prize winner, another New Jersey ticket matched four white balls plus the Powerball to win $50,000. That ticket was purchased at Barnegat Quick Stop, 21 South Main St., Barnegat in Ocean County.
Until January, New Jersey lottery winners were required to be identified, but a law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy now provides winners with the the option to remain anonymous.

North Carolina ticket wins $1 million
The other big Powerball winner on Wednesday was a ticket in North Carolina that won $1 million by matching all five main numbers.
There were also four tickets that each won $150,000 by matching four main numbers plus Powerball and adding the Power Play multiplier. Power Play was 3X last night, so these winners' $50,000 prizes are actually now worth three times as much.
There were a total of 463,488 winners in Wednesday's draw, so make sure you check your ticket and see if you've won a prize.
Powerball changes to jackpot and rollovers now in effect
The jackpot has now reset to $20 million for the Saturday, April 11 drawing. On April 2, Powerball announced that after the next jackpot win, there would no longer be a minimum jackpot or rollover amounts. Instead, the starting jackpot and rollover levels would be determined by ticket sales and interest rates.
The minimum starting jackpot was previously a guaranteed $40 million, with rollover increases of at least $10 million between draws.
Ticket sales have slumped since many Americans are under stay-at-home orders aimed at curbing the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, low interest rates designed to help the economy will result in reduced annuity yields.
“These changes are necessary to ensure that ticket sales can support the Powerball jackpot and other lower-tier cash prizes,” said Gregg Mineo, Powerball Product Group Chairman. “Our number one priority is making sure that the Powerball game can continue to assist lotteries in raising proceeds for their beneficiaries.”
The Powerball Product Group, made up of 38 state lotteries, will announce the current jackpot and rollover level before each drawing.
Powerball multi-draw ticket refunds
Players who purchased a Powerball multi-draw ticket in one of the following states may be eligible for a refund or free plays due to the jackpot and rollover changes.
Mega Millions tickets are also eligible in Connecticut, Iowa, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

- Connecticut: Advance action tickets purchased before the jackpot was won on April 8 and with remaining draws are eligible for a refund.
- Iowa: Free-play coupons are available to players who live in Iowa, for multi-draw tickets purchased no later than 4:00 pm on April 2, for a drawing held on or after Wednesday, April 8.
- Minnesota: Players can receive a refund for multi-draw tickets purchased on or before 5:00 pm on April 2. Refunds will be for the price of all remaining drawings after April 8 through the expiration of the ticket.
- North Carolina: Multi-draw tickets bought on or before April 2 are eligible for a refund of the price of all remaining draws after March 25 through the ticket expiration.
- South Carolina: Multi-draw tickets bought on or before April 2 are eligible for a refund of the price of all remaining draws after April 11 through the ticket expiration.
- Wisconsin: Players who purchased multi-draw tickets on or before April 4 may receive a refund.
