The lucky player from Massachusetts who won Powerball’s second-largest jackpot of $758.7 million on Wednesday night has quickly come forward to claim her money. Mavis Wanczyk, a resident of Chicopee, has already quit her job as a hospital worker as she looks forward to a future of virtually limitless financial opportunities.

Wanczyk, who likes to be called Mave, bought her ticket from the Pride Station & Store on Montgomery Street in Chicopee just a few hours before Wednesday’s drawing. She chose her own numbers, explaining: “Like maybe birthdays, maybe one from here, one from there, I just, whatever could work. There’s a thing between me and my mom and my stepfather, and a friend, we all go out to dinner on Friday night and we play Keno and our number is 4.”

Accompanied by her mother and sisters at a hastily-arranged press conference on Thursday, Mavis revealed that she found out about her win whilst chatting with a friend on her way out of the Mercy Medical Center where she works. She recalled saying that a jackpot win was ‘a pipe dream she had always had,’ when her pal started started reading the winning numbers out to her and left her stunned. “I couldn’t do anything so he followed me to make sure I made it home safely. That’s how I found out, from him.”

Mavis has decided to take a one-off lump sum of $480.5 million rather than the full jackpot amount spread out over 30 annual instalments, and after taxes it is estimated that she will receive about $336 million.

The 53-year-old has wasted little time in moving forward with her life, having quickly got in touch with her work to say that her 32 years of service were at an end. She said: “I’ve called them and told them I won’t be coming back.” As for her immediate plans, Mavis said: “I’m going to go hide in my bed.”

As Mavis considers what else she will do with her money, Powerball players across the US can try to follow in her footsteps by winning Saturday’s jackpot. The top prize is worth $40 million, and you can give yourself a chance of winning by visiting an authorized retailer in a participating state or choosing numbers online. Good luck!
