Louisiana Lottery Announces Changes To Lotto
Tuesday July 28th 2020The starting jackpot for Louisiana Lotto will be doubled as part of changes to the game that will be introduced ahead of the drawing on August 5. Officials have hailed the revamp as a move that will offer even more excitement to Lotto players.
Bigger Jackpots
The minimum top prize for Lotto will go up from $250,000 to $500,000, giving you the opportunity to win twice as much as had previously been available at the start of a jackpot roll.
If the jackpot is not won, it will roll over to the following drawing and an even larger amount will be put up for grabs. The change is set to create more big prizes on a regular basis.
“We’re excited that we will be able to offer players more frequent Lotto jackpots worth $1 million or more,” said Louisiana Lottery President Rose Hudson. “Our players told us what they want, and we are responding with a Louisiana game that is still only a dollar to play.”
New Number Matrix
Another change to the game will be in the number matrix. Under the new rules, you will have to select six numbers from 1 to 42. Prior to the update, you have had to choose six numbers from 1 to 40.
This tweak to the format will have a knock-on effect on the odds. The overall chances of winning a prize will move from 1 in 30 to 1 in 34.4.
The rest of the game will remain the same. The cost of entry will still be $1, while the prizes for matching four or five numbers will continue to be calculated on a pari-mutuel basis - payouts will vary from draw to draw depending on how many tickets are sold and the number of winners. The Match 3 prize is $3.

Lotto has been played in Louisiana since 1992 and this is only the fourth time that the game has changed in 28 years. The biggest win dates back to 1993, when two ticket holders split $31 million. The changes will come into effect on August 2.
