Lottery jackpots climb around the world

Monday March 14th 2011

Lottery players across the globe lucked out in recent days, with jackpots in Europe, America and the UK going unclaimed. A total of 11 Mega Millions players matched the five main numbers in Friday’s draw in order to scoop $250,000 each, but they all failed to correctly predict the Mega Ball, which means the game’s $151million jackpot went unclaimed. As a result, the estimated jackpot for tomorrow night’s Mega Millions draw stands at $172million.

Lottery ticket sales for this week’s EuroMillions game are set to go through the roof after last Friday’s £68m went unclaimed. Lottery organisers have announced that the estimated jackpot for this Friday’s game stands at £90million. If one UK player were to scoop the lot they would become Britain’s second-biggest lottery winner, just behind an anonymous player who won £113million last year.

Saturday’s UK Lotto draw also failed to produce a jackpot winner, which means a £6.9million rollover prize will be up for grabs this Wednesday. But while the game’s top prize starts to grow once again, organisers are still waiting to hear from the player who struck gold on Wednesday, March 9, and won a triple Lotto rollover jackpot of £17.7million.

No doubt organisers will be announcing record ticket sales in countries across the world later this week, as players buy lotto tickets online and queue up at lottery retailers in order to be in with a chance of winning.
