The international award was presented by the Public Gaming Research Institute which praised Ms DeFrancisco's efforts to shape America's lottery industry.

During her time at the Georgia Lottery, Ms DeFrancisco has helped increase the amount of money raised for beneficiary programmes over 12 consecutive years – the only traditional lottery in America to do so.

James F. Braswell, chair of the Georgia Lottery’s board of directors, said: "Georgia is very fortunate to have a leader like Margaret at the helm of its lottery.

"As a result of her leadership, the Georgia Lottery’s success record is unmatched, not only in the U.S., but in the world."

To date, sales of lotto tickets in Georgia have raised more than $12.3billion for educational projects.
