Labourer wins $1m in an instant
Saturday November 27th 2010A 41-year-old labourer, who was teased by his friend for wasting money on two New York Lottery instant scratchcards, has walked away with a cool $1million. Michael Schmidt, of Burt, Niagara County, was out shopping on November 6 when he decided to try out his luck on two $5 lottery scratch-off tickets. He said: “I finished shopping and stopped at the (lottery) machine on the way out of the store. A friend walked by and laughed at me for wasting my money. Now, that makes me laugh!”
Mr Schmidt, who has worked for the past 15 years as a labourer at the Candlelight Cabinetry factory won $50,000 a year for the next 20 years, which equates to a net payout of just over $33,000 each year.
But he’s not planning on rushing out and buying a flash new car. Instead, Mr Schmidt plans to invest some cash in an old Chevy that he can fix up in his spare time.
He said: “I had a Chevelle when I was younger. It was the first car I ever bought with my own money. It’s just my favourite car.”
