Idaho Lottery Launches New 5 Star Draw Game

Thursday October 3rd 2019

Idaho Lottery officials are confident that their new game, 5 Star Draw, will prove to be successful for players and also help to benefit the state. It is the first new draw game to have been launched in Idaho for two years and offers jackpots that begin at $250,000.

The first drawing took place on Tuesday October 1st, after tickets for the game went on sale on Sunday. Drawings will be held twice a week, taking place at 8:00 PM Mountain Time on Fridays as well as Tuesdays.

How 5 Star Draw Works

To play 5 Star Draw, you must pick five numbers from 1 to 45. You get two chances for each play, so you can either select two sets of numbers on your playslip - marked as Panel A and Panel AA - or ask for a Quick Pick if you would prefer random numbers.

It costs $5 per play, but you can also take advantage of the ‘Buy 5 Special’ offer, which allows you to play five times for $20. There are five play boards (going up to Panel E and Panel EE) on a playslip, and you can take part at any Idaho Lottery retailer.

To win a prize, at least two of your numbers must match up with the winning numbers drawn. Payouts increase as you match more numbers, as shown in the table below:

Numbers Matched Prize Odds of Winning
5 of 5 Jackpot 1 in 610,880
4 of 5 $1,000 1 in 3,054
3 of 5 $20 1 in 78
2 of 5 $5 1 in 6

The jackpot starts at $250,000 and rolls over to the following drawing if it is not won. There was no winner in Tuesday’s first draw, so the prize for Friday night will be worth $254,000. The jackpot will be split if there are multiple players who match all the numbers.

The jackpot will be paid out in a single cash lump-sum payment, so there is no option to claim it as an annuity. All prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing.

How The Game Will Help Idaho

The last time that a new game arrived in Idaho was back in February 2017, when Idaho Cash went on sale. The state’s Lottery Director, Jeff Anderson, has high hopes for 5 Star Draw.

He said: “Our players really enjoy Idaho-only draw games with big prizes. This game, which gives players two chances to win for $5, or 10 chances for $20, was already creating a lot of excitement before we launched it. We're looking forward to it being successful, not only for our players, but also for our beneficiaries - Idaho's public schools and the Permanent Building Fund."

The Idaho Lottery has raised over $906 million for the state over the past 30 years, with a record $60 million coming in fiscal year 2019. Twenty percent of the money raised from ticket sales goes to the annual dividend to support public schools and the Permanent Building Fund, so the launch of a new game is sure to boost the people of the state even more.
