Florida Joins MegaMillions

Wednesday May 15th 2013

Florida officially became the 43rd State to join MegaMillions today whens a 7-Eleven convenience store in Citrus Park, Tampa sold the very first ticket. The State couldn’t have joined at a better time as the MegaMillions jackpot of US$190 million is the biggest it has been for over a year. With the Powerball jackpot also still climbing, could there be lottery frenzy in Florida this week?

Florida spokesperson Meagan Dougherty certainly seems to think so. She explained, “We are joining in at a time when both games have huge jackpots, and that creates a frenzy for our players who want to play big jackpot games. When the jackpots are high, that's when people who don't normally play participate.”

Florida has just seen its most successful year on record with total lottery sales increasing by US$440 million to US$4.45 billion last year alone. Lottery Secretary Cynthia O’Connell has said that Floridians have been asking to join MegaMillions for several years and that the excellent fiscal results last year finally made it a viable prospect.

If the current jackpots of both MegaMillions and Powerball continue to roll, there is every chance that Florida could have an extremely successful first year selling both multi-state lotteries. Furthermore, with all profits from lottery revenue in Florida going towards education, lottery winners will not be the only beneficiaries of these huge jackpots.
