Drawer clean-out nets Maryland Lottery player $250k

Wednesday January 26th 2011

The decision to have an early spring clean has left a Maryland Lottery player $250,000 richer. The 46-year-old Baltimore man, who has asked not to be named, was tidying up a dresser drawer at his home when he came across some old Mega Millions lottery slips.

“I figured they were expired,” he told lottery organisers.

He took the two tickets, which he’d bought in August, to a local store to scan them in. The first revealed a $2 win, while the second turned out to be worth a quarter of a million dollars.

The winner says he only goes out to buy lottery tickets every once in a while, and isn’t planning to rush out to make any major purchases. He told lottery organisers that the cash will be left in the bank for a couple of years, although he does plan to take his 16-year-old daughter for a special day out.

Last night’s Mega Millions lottery draw again failed to provide a jackpot winner. Five players correctly picked the main numbers 5, 8, 31, 46 and 50, but no one had the Megaball, 4. Each of these players will receive a cheque for $250,000, but the top prize will roll over once again.

The estimated jackpot for this Friday’s Mega Millions draw now stands at $77million.
