California Lottery Sales Surpass $5 Billion
Wednesday October 29th 2014Ticket sales for the California Lottery have exceeded the $5 billion mark for the first time in the organization’s 30-year history. According to a recent news release, sales have increased by more than $588 million, or 13.2 percent, from the last fiscal year.
Out of this amount, a total of $1.35 billion was generated for California’s education system, resulting in an extra $65 million being allocated to more than 1,100 public school systems across the Golden State.
The increased sales were attributed to Californians buying tickets for large jackpots offered by Powerball and Mega Millions as well as residents showing a rising interest in the instant win games referred to as “scratchers”. Sales of these games increased by nine percent in the last fiscal year.
Paula LaBrie, the acting Lottery director, said that it had been “an exciting year” for players and that the organisation was “proud of the record-breaking amount of supplemental funds sent to California’s public schools.” She also expressed a desire to see the California Lottery work even harder to better support educational initiatives.
