Anxious wait for Lotto Max winners
Tuesday February 1st 2011A group of Canadian lottery players has been forced to put celebrations on hold, despite winning $50million on the country’s Lotto Max draw. The syndicate, which is made up of 24 workers from Toronto’s Bombardier Aerospace plant, came forward to collect their cheque yesterday after scooping last Friday’s lottery jackpot. But additional claimants have now come forward, leaving the players without any cash and facing the prospect of a legal battle.
According to Toronto’s City News, Canadian lottery officials said more individuals arrived at their head office on Monday afternoon to make a claim and as a result, any payout has to be delayed. There will now be an investigation to discover who is entitled to the money.
It is the second large lottery jackpot win by a syndicate in a matter of weeks. Workers from the Bell Canada telephone company call centre, also based in Toronto, won $50million on January 3. As in the Bombardier case, further claimants have come forward and so far no money has been handed over.
The Bombardier workers apparently only buy lottery tickets ahead of the large jackpot draws, and whatever the outcome of the investigation, they’ll certainly be glad they didn’t miss out on last Friday’s game. This week’s Lotto Max draw has an estimated jackpot of $21million.
